Abstract

The article examines the work of the contemporary Ukrainian composer Viktor Kaminsky – Concerto for piano and chamber orchestra "In Memory of Vasyl Barvinsky", written by the composer in 1995. The article presents the history of the Concerto's creation and performance, outlines its ideological and artistic intent, connected with the tragic fate of the outstanding Ukrainian composer of the first half of the twentieth century V. Barvinsky. It is noted that the work is included in the repertoire of pianists known in Ukraine and abroad: People's Artist of Ukraine Etella Chupryk (premiere performance), Honoured Artists of Ukraine Oksana Rapita and Jozsef Ermin. It has been determined that the Concerto has a one-movement structure of the poem type, which allows for complete freedom of compositional and dramatic thinking. The work consists of a number of different episodes, which are combined on the principle of contrast and represent new stages in the development of the ideological concept of the work. The dramaturgical role of each section of the Piano Concerto is outlined, where the episodes of solo cadenzas play a particularly significant role. It is determined that the complex of leitintonations set out in the introduction cements the form of the Concerto and becomes the driving force of its development. The analysis of the musical language of the work, which organically combines the intonational symbolism of baroque and romantic music with examples of modern compositional techniques – aleatorics, sonority, serialism – allows us to attribute it to the postmodern-neo-romantic trend characteristic of the Ukrainian piano concerto of the late twentieth century - early twenty-first century. The innovative nature of the dramaturgical solution (the use of direct quotation from V. Barvinsky’s Sonata in the culmination zone) is connected with the humanistic concept of the work - a call to protect the spiritual values of mankind.
