Abstract

Considered Oleksandr Bilash’s mono-opera “Ballad of War” based on Ivan Drach’s poem “Ballad of Genes” is reviewed. Attention is paid to the historical retrospective of the facts revealed in the literary text which reveal the issue of the tragic theme of the Second World War for all mankind. The story line of the mono-opera is characterized, which reflects the feelings of the heroes in a moment of extreme human experiences. It is noted that the literary components of the text occupy a significant place in the artistic composition of the work and also affects the principles of its structural organization. The analysis of the literary text, which is united by a single core – a dramatic conflict, which determines the logic and character of the overall development, is carried out. A detailed analysis of the text revealed that the original presentation of facts in I. Drach’s “Ballad of Genes” which are alternately arranged in prose and poetic form of episodes found a harmonious reflection in the compositional structure of O. Bilash’s mono-opera. It is determined that the main unifying factors of the work are: first of all, the principle of reprise closing (by highlighting the textual reprise) where the epilogue is a thematic and tonal reprise and at the same time as the prologue framing is performed, contributing to the integrity of the composition; another unifying factor is, no less important, the principle of end-to-end refrain. A detailed music-theoretical analysis of the mono-opera is conducted (melody, harmony, texture, etc.). The role of the genre orientation of the song musical language of the mono-opera is emphasized, which is distinguished by its richness and diversity, the use of song melodies of various types: lyrical, heroic, epic, dramatic. Brief biographical information about the authors is provided. The relevance of O. Bilash’s mono-opera based on the text of I. Drach “The Ballad of War” in today’s conditions is emphasized. Parallels are drawn between the war crimes and brutality of the fascists in the Second World War with the terrorism and barbarism committed by the Russian army on the lands of Ukraine after the full-scale invasion of February 24, 2022.
