RESEARCH OF THE SOUNDSCAPE OF THE NEWLY DISCOVERED MUNICIPAL SPACE “DIM 42”

Abstract

The topic of the interaction with the sound environment in the composer’s work at the example of an acoustic research of a building in Lviv at Rynok Square, 42. To some extent, this is a newly discovered space that makes it possible to explore previously unexplored aspects of the city’s soundscape and its influence on the composer’s creative process. On September 16, 2023, a group of students and teachers of the Department of Composition of the Lviv National Music Academy named after M. V. Lysenko conducted a sound study of the mentioned space, and on September 30, 2023, a concert of works by young composers was held as a part of the "School of listening" series of events, documenting the process of creative interaction with sound environment. The presented compositions were created using pre-recorded sounds of random objects and interior elements that filled the space at the time of the study. The purpose of the study is to rethink the composer’s interaction with the sound environment and soundscape in the creative process. Important is the reflection of the students of the Department of Composition of the Lviv National Music Academy named after M. V. Lysenko and their reinterpretation of the space as individual creative units. Student composers whose works were analyzed in this study are Maryan Fil, Anna Gurina, Andriy Kostiv, Alisa Formaziuk, and Zakhar Ozerskyi.
