Abstract

The tragic events that took place in the history of Ukraine at the beginning of the last century were uniquely and modernly reflected in the work of Borys Lyatoshynskyi. 20s of the XX century can be called a transformational period of compositional technique, where the traditional norms of Ukrainian music are changing, thanks to the development of the style of modernism. The work of B. Lyatoshynskyi in the 1920s is a powerful layer of expression of national character The formation of symbolic tendencies in the composer's musical language was determined by the appearance of an experimental work in 1925 – the piano cycle "Reflection", which consists of seven contrasting expressive pieces. The search for new compositional techniques of musical expression influenced the construction of the cycle, its figurative content. The original musical symbols and musical-rhetorical figures, which are closely related to the national thinking of the composer, their sacred meaning (in particular the number seven) and their interpretation in the cycle are a reflection of the worldview of the young artist. The cycle "Reflections" by B. Lyatoshynskyi is a brilliant expression of the multifaceted nature of the Ukrainian mentality, and is a symbolic dialogue through the ages.
