SOUND LANDSCAPE AND ECO-CONSCIOUSNESS IN MODERN UKRAINIAN ELECTROACOUSTIC MUSIC

Abstract

The article explores the topic of environmental consciousness through the prism of contemporary electroacoustic music and sound installations using the works by Ukrainian composers Ostap Manulyak, Yana Shliabanska, Tetiana Khoroshun, Ostap Kostyuk and Liuba Plavska as an example. The importance of eco-consciousness in Ukrainian culture is considered in a historical perspective. The importance of opposing the Ukrainian vision of harmonious coexistence with the environment to the destructive processes typical for imperial culture has been traced for more than a century. The historical challenges that the Ukrainian nation has gone through and that still have to go through make the topic of the ecology of human consciousness relevant. In modern music and art, the concept of sound landscape and sound ecology begins to play an increasingly important role. Using the example of the analysis of Ostap Manulyak’s composition “Sounds of the City” and the interactive installation “Verbova” authored by Yana Shliabanska, Tetiana Khoroshun, Ostap Kostyuk and Liuba Plavska, ways of using the transformation of the sound landscape to focus thinking and help in achieving a state of psychological balance are considered.
