The article is devoted to the consideration of genre-style incarnations (“masks”) of viola and proving the exceptional polyvector and unique nature of the instrument. Compared to other common instruments (such as the violin and cello), viola quickly attracts the attention of both composers and performers, thus demonstrating an extremely high potential for use in music culture, while allowing to simulate the likely increase in attention to it and its development in future, because the appearance of works for viola solo and viola ensembles, along with arrangements of already written music, signals the inherent cultural resource, which is revealed and not fully explored. The object of research was the viola as a participant in musical creativity, and the subject as a variety of interpretations (“masks”) of the viola by composers and performers in the context of the history of European musical culture. The aim of the study is to characterize the evolution of viola use over historical epochs and to trace the relationship with theatrical concepts. The practical significance of the article lies in the possibility of using the above materials and conclusions to better understand the features of the viola performance. The work is based on current modern culturological and scientific articles, it presents conclusions based on the analysis of modern music, reveals the issues of motivation for performance.
