ANALYSIS OF REVIEWS AS A TOOL FOR RESEARCHING THE PIANISTIC ACTIVITY OF BORIS KUDRYK

Abstract

The article examines the multifaceted musical activity of Borys Kudryk (1897–1952), an outstanding representative of the musical culture of Galicia in the first half of the twentieth century. The author emphasizes his role as a composer, musicologist, folklorist, music critic and teacher. concertmaster. Based on the analysis of autobiographical materials, archival documents, memoirs of contemporaries, and press reviews of the time, the stages of Kudryk’s performing skills are reconstructed, and his concert and accompaniment activities in Lviv, Rohatyn, and other cities are outlined.Based on the narrative of the information material, the article highlights Borys Kudryk’s piano repertoire, which included works by Ukrainian composers, European classical and contemporary music; his pedagogical activity and participation in the concert life of interwar Lviv; and examines his performances on Polish radio. Considerable attention is paid to the artist’s cooperation with musical and theatrical institutions of Lviv during the Second World War, in particular with the Lviv Opera House, the light genre theater “Veselyi Lviv”, as well as his performances at the Literary and Artistic Club. The creative activity of B. Kudryk during his stay in Vienna is also noted. The article emphasizes the influence of Kudryk’s performance practice on his musicological research and pedagogical activities.The materials of the research are based on a broad scientific and bibliographic context, supplemented by little-known facts from Kudryk’s concert activity. The article expands the understanding of his creative heritage, emphasizing the importance of performance in shaping the artist’s unique contribution to the Ukrainian musical culture of the period.
