SOCIO AND CULTURAL NEEDS IN THE PROJECTION OF STANISLAV LYUDKEVYCH’S CONDUCTOR ACTIVITY AND THE CREATION OF HIS CHORAL COMPOSITIONS

Lyudkevych’s choral works were written under the influence of his conductor’s practice and music criticism. His intensive activity as a conductor lasted more than 40 years of his life. Lyudkevych’s choral creativity includes several dozen of different works: cantatas, original choral compositions, treatments of folk songs, religious works, spiritual songs, choral finals of symphonic works, editorial choral works of other composers. The purpose of the article is to research the Lyudkevych’s conductor activity and the creation of his choral work in the perspective of the socio and cultural needs of that time, to analyze two his different treatments: «The sun was hidden» and «A warrior was coming back from a war». The methodology of the article is based on using of a combination of different methods, such as musicological, analytical, theoretical, historical and comparative generalizing approaches. The scientific novelty lies in the addition of existing knowledge on the Lyudkevych’s life and work study, relating to his activity as a conductor, social needs of creation his choral works. Conclusions. During the long life Lyudkevych has actively worked as a conductor, a concertmaster and soloist of various choral ensembles. His activity has contributed to the development, activization and professio-nalization of the choral movement in Galicia in the twentieth century. Socio and cultural requests of that time influenced the writing of most of his choral works. Lyudkevych has given them an important educational and patriotic significance as a means of asserting the national conscious-ness of his contemporaries, expressing his own pro-Ukrainian civic position. The Lyudkevych’s choral compositions have satisfied the repertoire needs of the choral collectives of that time. They inspired him to create works of this genre, often as a response to historical circumstances, on the social events. Socio and cultural social needs were directly related to the process of the professionalization of musical life in Galicia.
