Abstract

The article explores Chinese bell music and its reflection in the piano work of Chinese composer Wang Jianzhong. Particular attention was paid to the design features of the Chinese bell and its varieties. Specific features of the technique of sound extraction in Chinese bells and the transfer of these features into piano music were revealed. The results of the research showed that at the present moment the problem of bell imitation in piano music has not been sufficiently studied, and Chinese piano music has interesting examples of works that contain bells imitation. The unveiling of the textural and sonorous possibilities of the piano gave rise to a new interpretation of the peculiar features of Chinese song and instrumental folklore. Links to European impressionism have been identified, as evidenced by the elements of sound-imaging, timbre and harmonic color that Chinese composers, including Wang Jianzhong, skillfully used in their works. The article deals with the structural specificity of Wang Jianzhong's piano works, their semantic-shaped filling, which played a unique role in the world of piano music. It is revealed that the character of his piano works is adapted through Chinese bell traditions, which have special features. Such features include the Pentatonic sound system and the twelve-tone Liu system, which had a impact on his compositional technique. Thus, imitation of the bell ringing on the piano allowed the composer to convey the authentic sound of folk instruments and the national colouring of ancient Chinese music traditions. The scientific novelty is that the author first analysed the relationship between Chinese bell traditions and modern compositional techniques. This made it possible to interpret the sound of Chinese piano works in a new way in the context of the combination of Eastern and Western music traditions.
