THE ROLE OF BORIS KUDRYK’S MUSICOLOGICAL PUBLICISM IN SHAPING THE CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL DISCOURSE OF GALICIA IN THE FIRST THIRD OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the musicological publicism of Boris Kudryk as an important factor in the cultural and educational process of Galicia in the first third of the twentieth century. The relevance of the study is conditioned by the need to comprehend the role of musicological thought in the context of socio-political transformations and the formation of a modern Ukrainian cultural identity. The focus is placed on the multifaceted activity of B. Kudryk as a musicologist, educator, publicist, and public figure, whose legacy significantly influenced the development of music education, performance culture, and the national self-awareness of Ukrainian society. The methodological framework of the study is based on a combination of historical-cultural, analytical-typological, and comparative approaches, which made it possible to systematize Boris Kudryk’s scholarly works and to determine the place of his publicism within the regional cultural and educational space. The article demonstrates that B. Kudryk’s musicological publicism fulfilled not only informative and critical functions but also clearly expressed educational, formative, and methodological roles. The main thematic areas of his writings are analyzed, including issues related to the Ukrainian folk song as the spiritual code of the nation, its educational and consolidating potential, the interaction between folklore and professional music, music-pedagogical publicism, and materials devoted to amateur art within the milieu of the Prosvita society. It is substantiated that the style of Boris Kudryk’s publicistic writings combined scholarly analytical rigor with accessibility and emotional persuasiveness, which made them oriented both toward a professional audience and a broad readership. The article concludes that the musicological publicism of Boris Kudryk represents a holistic phenomenon of Ukrainian culture that integrates analytical depth, pedagogical orientation, and an educational mission. Its significance extends beyond its historical period, retaining relevance for contemporary scholarly discourse and opening prospects for further research into the history of music education, cultural and educational processes, and the national artistic experience of Galicia.
