"THERE IS A SPECIAL SPARK WITHIN YOU, THE SPARK OF UKRAINIAN SPIRITUALITY" (FROM THE CORRESPONDENCE OF PAVLO MATSENKO AND YURIY FIALA)

Abstract

The article provides the history of correspondence between two prominent representatives of the Ukrainian emigration, namely: Pavlo Matsenko and Yuriy Fiala, which lasted from 1947 to 1973. The content of the correspondence is almost entirely related to the person of Yuriy Fiala, starting with the organization of his move to Canada. The texts of the letters allow immersing yourself in the world of the two addressees. In this tandem, Pavlo Matsenko is mainly focused on solving Yuri Fiala’s problems. But in an effort to help his younger colleague, he unwittingly provides valuable information that concerns his own life. The texts of the letters arouse interest both in terms of information and their emotional component, which plays the role of a kind of dactyloscopy of characters: the somewhat egocentric and emotional, sometimes exalted tone of Yuri Fiala’s speech and the measured benevolence of Pavlo Matsenko and his constant readiness to support.
