Abstract

The article analyzes the creative pursuits of Marichka Chaban, a Ukrainian artist, a talented composer, a member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine (as of 2019). The composer’s works are performed at various festivals and in many art projects. Her music is performed by Ukrainian choirs and symphonic ensembles. Marichka Chaban composes spiritual songs and creates choral opuses which develop Ukrainian traditions and are among the best spiritual compositions of contemporary artists. The article analyzes one of Marichka’s first Kyiv pieces – a diptych for solo flute – a valuable reinterpretation of the traditions of ancient Ukrainian dumkashumka. The author pays particular attention to the Regional Competition of Young Composers (2003), which was fateful for Marichka’s work, for which she had to compose a song for the lyrics by Taras Shevchenko. The author has studied in detail Marichka’s significant creative contribution: it is instrumental music, symphonic and piano oeuvre. The music pieces of Marichka Chaban are based on Ukrainian folklore archetypes and traditions of church singing in a broad sense: from strict psalmody, ancient canto to the melos of modern religious songs.
